THHN and THWN-2 wires are single-conductor building wires used for power and lighting in residential, commercial, and industrial systems. Each conductor is insulated with PVC and covered with a nylon jacket for protection against moisture, oil, and abrasion.
THHN is rated for dry and damp locations, THWN adds a wet-use rating, and THWN-2 offers full 90°C heat resistance in both wet and dry conditions. Available in solid and stranded copper constructions, these wires are easy to pull through conduit and deliver consistent electrical performance for branch circuits, control wiring, and general-purpose applications.
THHN is a single-conductor building wire used in conduit for lighting, branch circuits, and general wiring in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. It’s rated 600V and approved for dry or damp locations.
THHN is dry/damp-rated. THWN adds wet-location approval. THWN-2 is the most versatile—90°C heat rating in both wet and dry installs. If you want one wire that covers all conditions, pick THWN-2. Luckily, most THHN is now also dual-rated THWN-2 as well.
Solid wire is stiff and best for short, fixed runs like outlets and panels. Stranded wire is flexible and easier to pull through conduit or tight bends. Both have the same voltage rating.
Yes, but only inside conduit. The nylon jacket isn’t meant for direct sunlight or open exposure. For outdoor direct-use cable, choose UF-B, XHHW, or tray-rated options.
The nylon jacket gives some protection, but it’s not designed for constant oil or chemical contact. For harsh industrial exposure, use XHHW, MTW, or tray cable.
