Medium Voltage Cable

(Showing 24 of 72)

Medium voltage cables are rated between 2000V (2kV) and 35,000V (35kV). Typically used in industrial and mining environments to supply power to heavy machinery, as well as in power generation, and in mobile substations to conduct maintenance and repairs.

Medium-Voltage Cable Construction

A number of design considerations help ensure medium-voltage cables avoid charge build-up and unintended discharge. Surrounding an aluminum or copper conductor is a conductor shield, usually a semi-conducting material. The conductor and shield are insulated with a material such as cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) for chemical, oil and water resistance, as well as superior mechanical strength to protect the conductor in challenging environments.

The insulation is further shielded, often with a metallic tape or braid as an additional safeguard in the event of a fault. And finally, the cable is jacketed using XLPE, neoprene, propylene rubber (EPR), or chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), which are each suited for an array of environmental challenges, usage considerations and price points.

With the advancement of insulation and jacket materials technology, some cable designs forego the insulation shield and are considered non-shielded, although a conductor shield remains.

Most of the medium-voltage power cables we carry are manufactured by Prysmian or their subsidiary, General Cable.
